World Cup Brazil - For the Love of Colour

I love anything positive that brings people of the world together like the Olympics and now the World Cup. Some of you may hate the football but I enjoy it as although teams play against each other, it unites people. Barriers like language, race or background are broken despite war, poverty and crime. We all sing, cheer and celebrate for our love of football, it is infectious.

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan said of the World Cup:
"As the only game in the world that is played in every country by people of every race and religion."

Art also brings people together, every 4 years Brazilians paint their streets for the love of football. This year they are sharing it with the world.

With the World Cup starting today watch a country brought to life by its people and explore the colourful streets of Brazil in this short video to infect the non football fans amongst you!

Rainbow VW Beetle Print

It is common knowledge that I love the classic VW Beetle. A car full of personality, which is why I set my hand sketched and computer generated picture against a swirly rainbow background. It also seems that many others like this print too as it is fun and colourful. So I have created more prints ready for purchase.

Happy Diwali - The Festival of Lights

Diwali or Deepavali translates as "a row of lamps." The festival celebrates victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance, and so many divas, lights and candles are lit.

Divas, lights and candles are lit around homes, temples and streets.
I like celebrating Diwali, it's colourful, bright, spiritual yet fun, especially in India. It marks new beginnings and represents joy, love, reflection, forgiveness, light and knowledge.

Woman create Rangoli folk art on the floors and courtyards.

Rangoli, a traditional Indian decoration made of ground rice, dry coloured flour, sand or flower petals is created on living room and courtyard floors.

Rangoli in the courtyards.
Apart from decoration Rangoli is thought to bring good luck and is also created on marriage celebrations. Traditional designs include geometric shapes, deity impressions and flowers but Indian symbols of lotus flowers, leaves, peacocks and birds are also created.

Rangoli in living rooms.
I must celebrate Diwali in India some day, it's much more festive. Streets and homes come alive with candles, divas and lights, people are everywhere celebrating together creating a fun atmosphere.

Diwali at the Golden Temple, Amritsar, North India.
I also like the spiritual feeling where so many worshippers can be in the temple yet it still feels peaceful with all the candles set against the dark night.

Many worshippers but still peaceful.

Biffy Clryo - Their performance was pretty"Epic."

Bruno Mars couldn't have done a better job in closing the festival. Soulful, energetic, the guy's got the moves.

Children's Halloween Spider Project

Halloween is not far away, so why not keep the kids busy with this easy Halloween spider project, great for parties or to decorate the house with. This is copyright material taken from the site: http://crafts.kaboose.com

Sparkling Spiders
By: Amanda Formaro
Difficulty: Average
Age: 7 & up

What you'll need:
  • Styrofoam ball about 4" in diameter
  • Purple acrylic paint
  • Sponge applicator
  • 2 large wiggle eyes
  • Hot glue
  • 9 black chenille sticks
  • Colourful craft gems OR purple sequins & sequin pics

How to make it:
  1. Use the sponge applicator to paint the Styrofoam ball and allow to dry.
  2. Use 8 of the chenille sticks for legs by bending the bottom of each one into a foot, about 1” long. Bend at the “knee” about halfway up the stick.
  3. When the ball is dry, insert the 4 chenille sticks into each side of the body.
  4. Cut the last chenille stick in half and then cut one of those halves in half again. Bend the quartered chenille stick to create a “feeler” about ½” long and place one on either side of the face (on either side of where the mouth would be).
  5. Hot glue the wiggle eyes onto the spider’s face.
  6. Decorate the spider’s back with purple sequins, securing them in place with sequin pins. Younger children can glue craft gems to the back instead.
  7. Adjust the legs so that the spider stands on its own.
Tips:
  • Sequin pins are tiny and can be hard for younger children to manipulate. Use craft gems as an alternative.
  • Sponge applicators can be found by the paintbrushes in any craft store or at building supply stores as they are commonly used for applying stains and varnishes.
  • Styrofoam is very porous and can take a little while to dry. This is also a good time to cut and bend the chenille sticks.

Denver Chalk Art Festival

I came across Denver Chalk Art Festival online and it sounds quite interesting.

Copyright image from http://www.denverchalkart.org

It's a free 2 day street painting festival in June where over 200 artists use the streets as a giant canvas and turn them into a museum of chalk art. In order to promote arts awareness and education in Denver. It creates a unique colourful experience and atmosphere. It's pretty amazing what people can do with chalk, just so long as it doesn't rain!

Here are some of my favourites:

My Mardi Gras mask Decorated in my favourite colours using paint, feathers, sequins & gemstones.
© SHARONJEET GALSINH.
What is Mardi Gras?
It's the final day of carnival, a day of fun, feasting and merrymaking. It is celebrated in many Christian cultures just before the beginning of Lent. Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday" and called Shrove Tuesday in English.

Why Masks?
It is tradition to wear a masks and costumes on Mardi Gras day. They are used at the parades to get attention from float riders and the balcony revellers. Masks are made of feathers, sequins, glitter and even plaster. They imitate all the fun and festivities of Mardi Gras. Gold, purple and green masks embody the colours, spirit, pride and the true feeling of Mardi Gras.

Inspiration - Dogs

Dogs - they sure do inspire me. Only those who have had their own dog can truly understand the love, loyalty, intelligence & amazement of dogs. I really believe that looking after or walking someone else's dog just isn't the same as having your own dog that lives with you. As your dog will only show most loyalty and love to you, not someone who comes and goes and doesn't really know / understand them.

But with the sad events of 3 months ago Azza the Akita & Emerald the Labrador just seem to know and understand what's happened and so act differently towards me now in a way I cannot completely explain. And now I've also got to know a Pyrenean mountain dog & a German Shepherd. Dogs really amaze me. I've had one my whole life but they still know how to touch my heart.

Volkswagen Beetle Inspired Art

I really love the old Volkswagen Beetles & Camper vans iconic of 1960's. They're uniquefull of character & are one of the most photographed cars in the world. They symbolise what the sixties is all about - love, freedom, travel, fun & adventure. That's why I love them, plus they look good too! They've been the inspiration for my VW Beetle greeting cards. I've also created a hand painted print for the Beetle lovers!

My VW Beetle cards are inspired from my love of 1960's art & culture & VW Beetles & camper vans. My favourite design is the rainbow background one, the colours also reflect the 60's era.
